Weekly Recap - Jan 25, 2015

Great week of basketball in and around Pocatello! I was fortunate to be able to cover a total of 4 events this week, a combination of boys and girls basketball. Keep reading for the recap.

Now, let's recap:

  • Rigby vs Pocatello Boys Basketball - my heart goes out to the Pocatello boys basketball team. As I have covered them for the past few games they play with such intensity and vision, if you remember a couple weeks ago they took Preston (ranked #1 in the state) to double OT, then the following week they took a fresh Century team with Boise State bound standout Malek Harwell to OT. Both those games were lost, but the team continues to grow and develop. This week I watched them play another tough game against the Rigby Trojans. Though I was unable to attend the boys game against Madison I was happy to hear they won that game on a 3-point play at the end of regulation by Riley Whaley!
  • Rigby vs Pocatello Girls Basketball - it was the week of the Trojans in the Palace. This game was back and forth in the first half, however, the Trojans pulled ahead on a big 3rd quarter while the Indians could only muster 2 free-throws in that same quarter. It was another tough loss for the Indians to swallow. As districts quickly approach for the Girls teams in our area I am anticipating plenty of tight and emotion filled games ahead.
  • Century vs Highland Boys Basketball - this game was amazing and I was so happy I was able to cover the game for both teams. The gym was packed with standing room only as the city who has watched a combination of Malek Harwell, Stephan Gonzalez, and Conner Harding over the years came to an end with a hard fought Highland win in OT. Highland who is currently ranked 1st in the State and has only lost one game, to Borah early in December, was riding the shoulders of their senior leader. Century on the other hand has had an up and down year thus far, but with the return of Harwell and the supporting help of Leo Behrend and Sheldon Honena-Edmo the Diamondbacks are back to last years form and can be a serious contender for a District and State Championship. This game was the definition of rivalry and star talent on both squads.
  • Gooding vs American Falls Girls Basketball - I always enjoy making a trip out to American Falls. Even though American Falls has struggled this year, the team has battled in many of their games. The great thing about sports is the fact there is a tournament at the end of each season. Sure, the tournament is based on standing for seeding, however, the tournament is a new season with new opportunities to claim victory.

Best of the week in photos:
